What are EDT lessons? Check out the below introduction to your Essential Driver Training, from the Road Safety Authority.
What is covered in EDT Lesson #5?
In lesson 5 we cover more complex driving situations such as negotiating bends, entering and exiting junctions, changing lanes, performing a turnabout and reversing around a corner.
Here is an ISM video guide to performing a ‘turnabout’.
Observation is key for this manoeuvre. You will need to use your ‘POM‘ routine for this.
P – Prepare (select your gear, keep your hand on handbrake, find biting point)
O – Observe (do your 6-point check)
M – Move (signal, release handbrake, move off if it is safe to do so)
Reversing around a corner (to the left)
This is a manoeuvre you will be asked to perform on your driving test.
I will help you find your reference points, learn where your ‘point of turn’ is, and make sure you are constantly observing your surroundings while doing this.
Reversing around a corner is something you will need to practice a lot, with your sponsor, as well as on driving lessons.
HINT: When you reach your ‘point of turn’ (when you no longer see the kerb in your left side mirror), turn the steering wheel upside down in an anti-clockwise direction, then adjust as you need to as you move around the kerb. Straighten up the steering wheel in a clockwise direction once you start becoming parallel to the kerb on the left.
